PLEACE.id – The government is targeting the demographic bonus as a momentum to improve the national economy while raising its level to become a developed country. In order for this potential to be optimally utilized, improving the quality of human resources (HR) through education is a key element in realizing it.
Segara Institute Executive Director, Piter Abdullah explained, Indonesia will experience a peak demographic bonus in the 2030-2045 period.
The productive age population is predicted to reach 318.96 million in 2045 according to the 2015-2045 Indonesian Population Projection Report of the Ministry of National Development Planning and the Central Bureau of Statistics.
Of this number, the productive age population is estimated at 207.99 million people (65.2 percent), while the non-productive age population will reach 110.9 million people (34.8).
“The abundance of productive age should be watched out for. The demographic bonus has the potential to turn into a demographic disaster when the economy cannot absorb the entire workforce,” he said in his statement, Tuesday (22/11/2022). To anticipate these conditions, the government must improve the quality of human resources through a superior education system.
According to Piter, one way is by raising the quality of teachers. This increase can occur when those who choose to work as teachers are the best college graduates.
“Teacher work should not be the last choice, it must be the first choice. For this reason, the teacher’s work must be honorable and provide welfare,” said Piter. Currently, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek) is working to improve the quality of Indonesian education and the welfare of teachers through the State Civil Apparatus Government Employees with Work Agreement (ASN PPPK) program.
